Because I wanted to

November 18, 2024

I built it because I wanted to.

I made it because I wanted to.

I wrote it because I wanted to.

Wanting to do something is a perfectly valid reason to do things!

If you’re in the habit of doing things (especially weird things), people are going to continually ask you why you did that. Why did you do that when you could just use this thing? Why did you do that when you could just duct-tape these other things together? Don't you know that's a waste of time? Don't you know that someone else already did that?

Yes, maybe. But I wanted to!

Not everything has to be a purely strategic pursuit of efficiency. Sometimes we want to do things for the sake of doing them. Sometimes we want to reinvent the wheel so that we can understand wheels better. It's a good thing to follow your curiosity with no regard to practicality.

If you want to make something, go make it. Wanting to do it is reason enough.
